I started training in fire investigations prior to my employment with the City, serving with the St. Clair County Arson Task Force
I graduated from the University of Illinois Fire Academy (Fire Service Institute) in 1982 and attained my AAS degree in Fire Science from Southwestern Illinois College in 1991. During this time, I also continued my education in fire investigation by attending seminars and classes on the subject matter.
In 1989, I completed the requisites for certification through the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) and am currently a Certified Fire Investigator. My certification is not only recognized throughout the U.S. but also in the International Community. Continuing education is required to maintain certification which expires every 5 years.
I have served on various committees of the IAAI including the Training & Education Committee and am currently Co-Chairman of the Independent Investigators Advisory Committee.
I have been employed in the private sector since 1988 as an Origin & Cause Investigator, doing consulting work for the insurance industry in subrogation and fraud cases. I am Certified as an Expert Witness in both Federal and Circuit Courts.
My work for the insurance industry has cumulated in over 1800 fire and explosion investigations, including nearly 1800 hours of continuing education in fire investigation practices. The emphasis of this training is based on the Scientific Method outlined in NFPA 921, which is recognized throughout the fire investigation community in the U.S. and Canada.
